Today is the posting date for the last story I worked on for [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang. In addition to my own story that I wrote, I did art for 3 other stories. The other authors were all great to work with, and I loved making banners and mixes for all of them.

So here's what I did:
The Lies That They Gave You, my Planet of the Apes story, with art by [livejournal.com profile] tarlanx
Art for "Groundhot Day", an Adventures of Brisco County Jr story by [livejournal.com profile] rise_your_dead
Art for "Vita Aethelstani", a Vikings story by [livejournal.com profile] oneiriad
Art for "Five Easy Steps To Falling In Love", a Live Free or Die Hard story by [livejournal.com profile] severina2001

This Big Bang is my absolute favorite to do, and this is my third year participating. In Round 1, I wrote a PotA story, and although I was sad that I didn't finish my Space: 1999 story for Round 2 last year, I was thrilled that I still got to participate as an artist. This year, for Round 3, I finally managed to be both an author and an artist! Many, many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] spikedluv for running this fabulous challenge, and I can't wait for Round 4!

Fandom: Live Free or Die Hard
Characters/Pairings: Matt/John

Summary: Art for [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang story. The steps to falling in love are pretty standard. A couple meets, goes on a few dates, gets to know each other. They spend time together. There is some hand-holding, some snuggling, kisses that progress to more carnal pursuits. Eventually, they realize that they want to spend the rest of their lives together.
But when you meet your other half on a wild ride across the country chasing terrorists who are trying to destroy America's infrastructure, it follows that the courtship process might evolve a little... differently. The hand-holding might involve mutant rats, for example (at least, it does if you think like Matthew Farrell.) The cuddling may just include rope and a few bad guys (because you're John McClane, and it follows that you get to that stage of the relationship on a holiday.)
The road to true love doesn't always run quite as smoothly as one would hope -- but John and Matt will get there.

This is a snippet from my story for [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang, a Planet of the Apes (TV series) story called "The Lies That They Gave You". The plot summary is thus: Burke, Virdon and Galen finally return to Earth of the past, to the astronauts' home, but not everything is as it seems.

Stories will be posting starting in early April. And I'm SO EXCITED that [livejournal.com profile] tarlanx has claimed my story to do art. Meanwhile, here's the snippet I posted to the [livejournal.com profile] smallfandomcafe today:

Yeah, who knew apes could be such clothes horses?” Burke reached over to retrieve his cell phone from the bedside table. “Do you know he even has shoe designers falling over themselves making custom shoes for those big monkey feet of his? When he finally moves off the base, he’s going to need a three bedroom place. One for him, one for his clothes, and one for his shoes.”

As Allison padded into the bathroom, Burke admired the view before scrolling through his short list of contacts to find Galen’s number. He tapped the screen to begin the call as the sound of running water and a cloud of steam came from the bathroom. He listened to the phone ring on the other end, then switch over to voice mail.

"Hello!” Galen’s excited voice exclaimed. He could hear his own voice in the background urging Galen to say something more, to state his name. “Oh, this is Galen. If you are getting this recording—isn’t it marvelous?—then I suppose that means I’m too busy to answer this telephone. But when it beeps at you in a moment, you can record a message of your own, and I will listen to it. Oh, and I’ll return your call.”

If you have any interest in doing fanart, I encourage you to go sign up to be an artists for smallfandombang. They have one of the most open interpretations of art I've seen, allowing fanmixes, podcats, icons, vids as well as graphics or traditio lotnal art. And because it's a lot of small, sometimes old or obscure fandoms, artists are given 6 weeks to do their art, and lots of help from their authors. Right now, of the 45 stories that are being offered, only 22 of them have been claimed. I've already claimed three. Last year I did art for a total of five, and had a blast. Come on over and play!

So now that yuletide is over, I've finally gotten back to working on my PotA story for [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang. Today is Snippet Saturday, and I finally have a new snippet to post.

Planet of the Apes (TV): The Lies That They Gave You

The door to the conference room rattled. Virdon quickly put the almost empty glass on the table, wincing at the heavy thud when it hit harder than he'd intended. His heart thumped just as hard in his chest.

The door slowly opened. A tall, stocky man entered and closed the door quickly behind him, hanging onto the knob with one hand behind his back as he leaned against the door. His blond hair was trimmed short, as was his beard. But the shape of the face was familiar.

“Alan?” The baritone voice was tentative, heavy with emotion.

Virdon’s world tilted off its axis, the room retreating into an unfocused background as his vision narrowed to the man before him. “Chris?”

Chris Virdon’s throat worked, his jaw trembled. Thirty years melted away, and the man who was taller and broader in the chest than Alan suddenly became a young boy who missed his father. “Dad—,” his voice broke, and he rushed forward to pull Alan into a fierce hug. “Dad,” he said again, his voice muffled into Alan’s neck, “Oh my god, Dad. I can’t believe it’s you. I can’t believe you’re home.”

After a quick trip to Best Buy when I found out yesterday, the LAST day of the warranty on my laptop, that the CD drive wasn't working right, I worked frantically to finish my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide assignment and squeaked it in right under the midnight deadline. It took me a while to find the right beginning, but once I had that, the story came pretty easily. It still has a lot more schmaltz in it than I'm really comfortable writing, and I'm not really happy with the ending, but I do have until the collection goes live on Christmas day to tweak it a bit. Which I will.

However, meanwhile, I took a pinch hit (yay, my first one!) for a story that I've been wanting to do for a long time. Rewatching the source material now to get the voices of the characters going in my head, but I've already got a plot zombie eating my brain, so that should go quick enough to make the midnight deadline for tonight. Then I *might* do one more treat to repurpose a story I had started and not finished last year, but which I really, really like some of the pieces of. We'll see how it goes.

Once [livejournal.com profile] yuletide is all done, then I need to get back to my [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang PotA story. Then back to my PotA novel that's been on hiatus for a couple of months now. But hoping that the momentum of these challenges will inspire me to push through the last few chapters to get that finished more easily. It'll get finished by hook or by crook, it's just a matter of how quickly.

Meanwhile, still waiting for [livejournal.com profile] mpregbigbang to post their artist claiming list that was supposed to go up a week ago. I'm itchy to do some art as well.

So today is the first Snippet Saturday for [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang. Here's the snippet I submitted for the new PotA story I'm writing.

Planet of the Apes (TV): The Lies That They Gave You

"I'm sure you have many questions, Colonel—" the General began.

Virdon couldn't contain himself anymore. "Yes, Sir. My family—"

General William Shelton cut him off with a sympathetic look. "Have been notified of your arrival and are en route here."

"What about Burke and Galen, Sir? Are they all right?"

"Major Burke and the chimpanzee Galen are being treated to all the same amenities that you are, Colonel. They are being given medical care and then debriefed. You'll be able to see them soon as well." Shelton smiled reassuringly. "You are heroes, not prisoners. But you've been through a tremendous ordeal, and we want to ease the shock of your return."

Virdon frowned. “General, it's obvious that this isn't the year we left Earth. But no one has been willing to tell me exactly how long we've been gone.” The unasked question hung in the air, making most of the dignitaries shift uncomfortably.

General Shelton was no exception. But he held Virdon's gaze with a steady stare. “The date is April 13, 2012, Colonel. You've been gone thirty-two years.”

I loved this big bang the first year I did it (with a PotA story), then the second year, I couldn't get my story off the ground (Space: 1999) but ended up doing art for 5 stories. This year I'm going to go back to my old standby and try to do a PotA story again.

Then there is this:

I LOVE doing reverse bangs for SPN (as a writer, not an artist). Most of the stories I have done so far for SPN have been for reverse bangs. Last year's "Meanwhile In Purgatory" for this challenge was a blast to do.

[livejournal.com profile] mpregbigbang author signups have opened. This was the first big bang I did art for, and I had a lot of fun. I don't think I'd sign up as an author, but I might do art again.

Finally [livejournal.com profile] yuletide!!!! Nominations start the middle of September. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this challenge and can't wait to do it again.

But first I have to finish my [livejournal.com profile] spn_bigpretzel story and get it posted tomorrow....

Title: Driving Opposites
Author: [livejournal.com profile] twilighthdfan
Fandom: The Fast and the Furious
Characters/Pairings: Dom/Brian
Art Type: story cover, fanmix (with covers)
Notes: Art for smallfandombang.  The story is an AU of the movie, where lots of people have mutant powers, and there is a slow, smoldering love story between Dom and Brian. I never saw any of the movies (but I'm a HUGE Vin Diesel fan), but I know the general plot and didn't feel like I needed more to thoroughly enjoy [livejournal.com profile] twilighthdfan's vision. Fandom: The Walking Dead
Characters/Pairings: Daryl/Glenn
Art Type: story cover, fanmix (with covers)
Notes: Art for smallfandombang. I really loved the angsty mood of this story, with it's themes of lost, longing, and a kernel of hope. The story cover focuses more on the gray devastation that Daryl lives with in a wintery Manhattan, while the mix focuses more on the relationship that gives him (and me) so many feelings. I don't want to spoil it, so you'll have to go read [livejournal.com profile] rsk110's amazing story for yourself. Art is also posted on AO3.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] severina2001
Fandom: The Walking Dead
Characters/Pairings: Daryl/Glenn
Art Type: graphic, fanmix (with covers)
Notes: Art for smallfandombang. The story is a schmoopy build on a relationship between Daryl and Glenn that takes place post-S2. [livejournal.com profile] severina2001 does a great job capturing all the characters, and with enough action to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. The graphic is based on a snarky Daryl comment in the fic, and I thought the screencap really just cried out for snarkiness. Art is also posted on AO3.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] laurie_ky
Fandom: The Incredible Hulk (TV)
Characters/Pairings: Jack McGee/David Banner (John Doe)
Art Type: chapter headers, fanmix (with covers)
Notes: Art for [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang. I loved this series in no small part due to Bill Bixby's gentle yet conflicted portrayal of David (Bruce) Banner, which was a beautiful counterpoint to the power and violence of the Hulk. [livejournal.com profile] laurie_ky's story really captures the feeling of the original series, but explores the developing relationship between Jack McGee and David Banner (who McGee only knows as John Doe) which, of course, never could have been shown on TV in that era. It's a slow, smoldering dance that parallels the show and references events in specific episodes. She chose Thomas Wolfe's Look Homeward, Angel as an inspiration piece, including quotes from it at the beginning of each chapter. I took that and ran with it, using photos of the actual marble angel statue that Wolfe references in the book. The songs in the mix span 1972-1981, and are songs I imagine David Banner might have listened to on his travels during the course of the series. The art is also posted on AO3.

I Haz A Sad

Feb. 3rd, 2013 04:34 pm
danagryphon: (Fuzzy Mama)
Unfortunately, it looks like I'm going to end up dropping out of the [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang this round. I tried to write a story in fandom I hadn't tried before, and it's just not coming together. I've been trying since frikkin' October to get this thing out. The deadline for the rough draft was this past Thursday, when it was supposed to be 80% (a minimum of 8K words) done. I had barely 2K words down. I asked for and got an extension until tomorrow for my draft, but here I am at the almost end of the weekend, and I now have 2600 words. Yeah. It just ain't happening.

I love Space: 1999 as a TV show. I love the characters, but I just can't for the life of me get into their heads to the point where I can write them. I don't know why. I actually love the first page or so, but then it's kinda like, what do they say now?

I'm frustrated, and I've been feeling like I couldn't write anything else while I had this hanging over my head. So I'm going to put it aside, and move on to other things that I have actual burning desire to write. At least I'll still be part of the bang because I signed up to do art, and I'm going to try to get one of the Walking Dead stories (why, oh why didn't I pick that fandom for my story??).

Speaking of art, the art for the [livejournal.com profile] mpregbigbang that I signed up to do is also due Monday, and that's actually in good shape. I've done a banner and a fanmix (including a cover) for each of the three stories, and if I have time before we post, I might actually do a couple more small pieces. My learning curve in photoshop is very shallow, but I'm trying to learn one new technique for each piece I do. I did some masking, some blurring techniques to make one section of a picture stand out against a blurred background, and some overlay stuff. I'm happy with how they are all turning out, and that I keep improving each time I do something. In general, big bangs always seem to have a dearth of artists, so I'm happy to be able to help out in that way.

Other projects I need to get done this week: I am making an evening gown for a fancy ball at the Shrine next Saturday, and I have to do calligraphy on a scroll (in French) to deliver to the Queen by Thursday. For the following weekend, I have to finish a bunch of leatherworking projects for K&Q A&S champs, plus another scroll. Then before the end of the month, I will do the leatherwork commission I have for a quiver.

Yeah, I think that's about it. Sad as I am that I'm not going to get the Space: 1999 story done for the [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang, it will really make my life a lot easier right now not to sit here and struggle with it.
danagryphon: (Xena)
What is it with me and old, tiny, obscure fandoms?

I'm almost done with my latest PotA story, hoping to post the final chapter tomorrow or this weekend. Now, the sad thing is, compared to some of the other fandoms I'm into lately, this 14-episode show that aired almost 30 years ago is huge and sprawling. Even though I seem to be the only person writing new stories right now, every now and then a new one will show up, and there is actually a nice little collection of old fanfics archived by my friend [livejournal.com profile] kassidy62.

My next big project is writing a story (or two) for [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang. Now this is a challenge that REQUIRES the fandoms to be small. But there is small and then there is MICRO. One of the fandoms I really want to write in for [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang is Space: 1999. I'm currently doing a rewatch of it. I have S2 on DVD, but I'm watching S1 on YouTube. If you aren't familiar with the show, the two seasons are practically different shows. Huge chunks of the cast where replaced between the two seasons, with entirely new characters, and no explanation of what happened to the old ones or where these new ones had been the first year. S1 was all about the science/mystery/adventure of space and aliens, while S2 focused much more the human drama of the Alphans. Anyway, my favorite characters are from S2, Tony Verdeschi (the new security chief) and an alien shapeshifter they pick up on the first episode named Maya. What I'd like to do is find a plot that captures the sense of wonder of S1, but using the characters from S2, specifically centered on Tony and Maya.

The only problem is, the bunnies are all hiding from me. I have no ideas for the story.

I'm hoping a rewatch will spark something. One thought I had in re-watching S1 is that maybe I'll find an event there that it would be interesting to do from Tony's POV, since he was never even seen until S2. But that would exclude Maya, since we see her arrival at the Moonbase in S2:E1.

My fallback story (as I said, I still hope to do both) is to write a Terra Nova story involving sentient dinosaurs. The other fandom I had signed up with as a possibility was the original Bionic Woman (still juiced over the rewatch of that this spring, unlike the disappointment that the Logan's Run series proved to be). In the meantime, [livejournal.com profile] yuletide also features small fandoms, but of course, that is much more of a crap shoot since I'll get matched to a recipient based on their requested fandoms (last year, the only fandom I had in common with my assigned recipient was The Walking Dead, but that turned out pretty cool). But that's part of the fun of that exchange is that you never know what you are going to end up with!

So stay tuned for updates
