The Organization for Transformative Works, the folks who run Archive of Our Own, Fanlore, and the Transformative Works and Culture Journal, put out a call for volunteers the other week for a number of positions on different committees. I applied for a position on the Strategic Planning Committee.

I did my "interview" today, which was an emailed series of questions about why I want the position, what I feel I can bring to the position, and a bunch of questions about dealing with criticism, dealing people who disagree with you, dealing with a diversity of perspectives, and communications strategies for tense situations. I found that I kept kinda repeating myself for many of the questions, my answers boiling down to, I've got a doctorate in science, I currently work in publishing, and I've been an educator. A bunch of the job will deal with collecting and analyzing data from the membership about the direction the OTW takes, and which issues and projects it devotes its resources to support.

I tell ya, for a "volunteer position", it's one of the most intense "job interviews" I've had. I have no idea if the position is really that competitive, that they get that many qualified volunteers that they need to turn some away, or if it's just a way to screen out the folks who like to volunteer for things that sound neat without having any real qualifications or idea of what they are volunteering for. I'm hoping the latter. The OTW does good, important work, and I would really like to support them by being a staff member.

So we'll see how it goes. If they decide I pass the "first interview", I get invited to take part in a "chat interview" next Saturday.

Fingers crossed.

This is a snippet from my story for [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang, a Planet of the Apes (TV series) story called "The Lies That They Gave You". The plot summary is thus: Burke, Virdon and Galen finally return to Earth of the past, to the astronauts' home, but not everything is as it seems.

Stories will be posting starting in early April. And I'm SO EXCITED that [livejournal.com profile] tarlanx has claimed my story to do art. Meanwhile, here's the snippet I posted to the [livejournal.com profile] smallfandomcafe today:

Yeah, who knew apes could be such clothes horses?” Burke reached over to retrieve his cell phone from the bedside table. “Do you know he even has shoe designers falling over themselves making custom shoes for those big monkey feet of his? When he finally moves off the base, he’s going to need a three bedroom place. One for him, one for his clothes, and one for his shoes.”

As Allison padded into the bathroom, Burke admired the view before scrolling through his short list of contacts to find Galen’s number. He tapped the screen to begin the call as the sound of running water and a cloud of steam came from the bathroom. He listened to the phone ring on the other end, then switch over to voice mail.

"Hello!” Galen’s excited voice exclaimed. He could hear his own voice in the background urging Galen to say something more, to state his name. “Oh, this is Galen. If you are getting this recording—isn’t it marvelous?—then I suppose that means I’m too busy to answer this telephone. But when it beeps at you in a moment, you can record a message of your own, and I will listen to it. Oh, and I’ll return your call.”

I've had a second LJ journal for a while now that has been languishing. I was originally going to use it for my writing, but I've decided instead that I'm going to use it for my SCA A&S stuff. My ISP recently decided to stop providing web space, and the majority of my old website was taken up with my A&S stuff. So now I'm going to switch it all over to [livejournal.com profile] danagryphon.

I'll be adding stuff there from this journal bit by bit, and will decide at some point if I want to delete the old stuff off this journal or not. I hate to lose the comments that people have made, though, so we'll see. Anyway if you are interested in reading about my adventures in medieval cooking, making scrolls, leather working, embroidery, making garb, or whatever other area of research catches my fancy, that's where it'll go from now on.

I'll still be using this journal for my fannish pursuits, including my writing and fanart, as well as personal updates.

I hope you'll come over to the new one and take a look.

Title: Come What May
Author: Last Winter Rose ([livejournal.com profile] last_winterrose)
Artist: Gryph ([livejournal.com profile] gryphon2k)
Fandom: Avengers
Art Type: Digital composite
Characters/Pairings: Bruce Banner/Tony Stark
Summary: Art for [livejournal.com profile] mpregbigbang story by [livejournal.com profile] last_winterrose.Bruce have been on the run from Ross for many reasons, one of them is that Ross want to use him to breed an army of mini Hulks. Now Bruce is living with the Avengers at Stark Tower and is in a relationship with Tony. In fact they've been talking about making it official. Plus, now with SHIELD also behind him, Bruce believes that he's safe from Ross. He's wrong. Ross gets a hold of him and force Bruce into Heat before letting his tops Alpha soldiers have at him. Once the others get to him, Tony has to help him through probably the worst Heat Bruce has ever had but they believe that the worst is behind them. A month later, however, they soon find that they just jumped out of the frying pan with Ross and into the fire.
Notes: Stories with the ABO dynamic fascinate me. I did a banner with a couple of images of the boys, one of them with looking distressed, since much of the story focuses on Bruce's struggle against Ross. But overlayed on that, a picture of the boys looking happy, because they do reach a happy place together. I also did an icon overlayed with a triskele, which is an often-used image for ABO dynamics.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] backrose_17
Artist: Gryph ([livejournal.com profile] gryphon2k)
Fandom: Torchwood/Avengers
Art Type: Digital composite
Characters/Pairings: Clint/Ianto, Natasha/Pepper, Tony/Phil, Tosh, Owen, Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Harold Saxon and some Jack/Ianto
Summary: Art for [livejournal.com profile] mpregbigbang story by [livejournal.com profile] backrose_17. When Jack left Torchwood Three behind to chase after the Doctor; he left behind more than just a broken heart for Ianto Jones he left behind their unborn child. Hurt and heartbroken Ianto seeks out help from the man who raised him, Phil Coulson, together with him and the ragtag group that Phil has acquired Ianto finds a new home and a love he didn't think he could ever have. Clint Barton has had a crush on Ianto since the moment they first met all those years ago and even if he is carrying the child of another man he will be there for Ianto and maybe win more than just Ianto's heart in the end.
Notes: I loved the background close up of Ianto and Jack with their heads touching; that Jack cares for Ianto shows in the story, but also that he has a lot of other pressures that pull him to leave. I looked for a picture of Clint that was a little softer, and of Ianto that expressed his hurt and uncertainty.
I wanted to give a nod to all the other characters who show up in the story, so I made a bar/divider of as many of the other ones as I could fit in there.

Title: Compromised Positions
Author: Tarlan ([livejournal.com profile] tarlanx)
Artist: Gryph ([livejournal.com profile] gryphon2k)
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Art Type: Digital composite, fanmix
Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay
Summary: Art for [livejournal.com profile] mpregbigbang story by [livejournal.com profile] tarlanx. When Atlantis decides to alter the physiology of its inhabitants, John and Rodney end up a bonded pair. But John has a duty to Stargate Command and Earth. How do you choose between duty and love?
Notes: I love the emotions this story evokes of making hard choices, sacrificing happiness for duty, of regret and ultimately, realizing that love is more important than any of that. I tried to capture the flow of the story with the song choices, going from songs about love, to songs about pain and hurt, and then reconciliation. I love John's expression in the screencap I used for the mix cover, with Rodney in the background.
For the banner, I wanted to create a composite of the elements of the story; Atlantis in the background, John and Rodney both with deliciously confused looks (because I picture their relationship having a lot of those kinds of moments), with the promise of family as a fainter image.
Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] tarlanx for being a great author to work with (again!); she always puts out such wonderful stories that the art just flows so easily.

If you have any interest in doing fanart, I encourage you to go sign up to be an artists for smallfandombang. They have one of the most open interpretations of art I've seen, allowing fanmixes, podcats, icons, vids as well as graphics or traditio lotnal art. And because it's a lot of small, sometimes old or obscure fandoms, artists are given 6 weeks to do their art, and lots of help from their authors. Right now, of the 45 stories that are being offered, only 22 of them have been claimed. I've already claimed three. Last year I did art for a total of five, and had a blast. Come on over and play!

danagryphon: (writing)
So I've been having a little performance issue lately (yes, I know, it happens to us all at a certain age). No, not THAT kind of performance. The writing kind. Words have really just not been flowing like I want them to (or even like they used to, which still wasn't as much as I wanted them to).

I've been trying to restrain myself with the number of big bangs and reverse bangs and story fests that I've been signing up for, because lately I seem to sign up and drop out of a bunch of them. This summer, I dropped out of the [livejournal.com profile] deancasbigbang (although I have a decent amount of that story done and do plan to finish it eventually). Last winter, I dropped out of the [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang, and that one really hurt because I LOVE that challenge. I haven't done any stories for [livejournal.com profile] smallfandomfest in an age. I did manage to get 3 stories written for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide this year, including taking on a last minute pinch hit, and a 500 or so word treat, but that was all done at the last minute as well, and even then, I had so many more ideas for other stories that never got done (but hey, at least there they have a chance to fill more prompts before next yuletide, called the new years resolution challenge)

Anyway, so I did do two challenges, the [livejournal.com profile] spn_reversebang and [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang. I got a fabulously dark and depressing prompt for the SPN one, and got that all squared away. For the other, I fell back on my beloved PotA and a story idea I've had brewing for a while. But it took me FOREVER to get the 8000 word minimum count (like I turned it in at 10:30 last night, right under the deadline), and the story still needs a lot of work.

And once I finish that, I need to go back and finish my PotA WIP, Human Nature, in which I left our heroes in the hands of the bad guys, literally in the middle of being tortured. (On the upside, I've actually gotten a couple of desperate sounding queries about when that will be updated again!)

Hopefully now that we are heading into spring, and out of my SAD (that's seasonal affective disorder) phase of the year, I'll find more motivation to start writing more prolifically again. It's not that the ideas aren't there... quite the opposite. I just can't find the discipline to sit down and write all the words. Even with editing the that I'm supposed to be doing for a couple of friends (sorry, [livejournal.com profile] kassidy62), I've been dropping the ball. And that just makes me feel more like a failure.

So I'll try to focus on the successes lately. I managed to actually get EVERYTHING done for Birka (big SCA event) I wanted to do, which included new garb for both me and E, calligraphy for two award scrolls, plus a private commission for an indenture scroll. And that was with Hubby springing on me a couple of weeks before that that he wanted a new outfit for competition at the Clown Institute (the weekend before Birka). I did get my SPN story done and posted on time, and it seems to be getting a fairly good reception (it's not going to be a gangbusters one, because I do kill off one of the main character). And I did get my PotA draft turned in. Time to buckle down, get that finished and spiffed up and then back to the WIP.

So many words, so little time.

So I did calligraphy for three scrolls for Birka this year, two for the Signet office, and one private commission.

Below are the Baronial Investiture scrolls for the new Baron and Baroness of Stonemarche. I only did the calligraphy. Words for both were written by Master Harold von Auerbach, illumination for the one on the left by Baroness Emma MacMinn, and the one on the right by my Laurel, Mistress Eleanore MacCarthaig (click to embiggen). The hand is Rotunda, to match the late period Italian white vine illumination.

This one was commissioned from me by [livejournal.com profile] farmhouse_ghost (Mistress Vienna) as an indenture contract for her first apprentice. The hand is my beloved Batarde, and the layout is based on 15th C. indenture documents like this one (Vienna provided the text). Two copies are done facing each other, and then after both are signed, it is cut down the middle (through the words, in this case, East Kingdom in Latin, representing the "government"), and each party is given half. I was honored to participate in the ceremony by doing the cutting. It was awesome. (again, click to embiggen)

So now that yuletide is over, I've finally gotten back to working on my PotA story for [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang. Today is Snippet Saturday, and I finally have a new snippet to post.

Planet of the Apes (TV): The Lies That They Gave You

The door to the conference room rattled. Virdon quickly put the almost empty glass on the table, wincing at the heavy thud when it hit harder than he'd intended. His heart thumped just as hard in his chest.

The door slowly opened. A tall, stocky man entered and closed the door quickly behind him, hanging onto the knob with one hand behind his back as he leaned against the door. His blond hair was trimmed short, as was his beard. But the shape of the face was familiar.

“Alan?” The baritone voice was tentative, heavy with emotion.

Virdon’s world tilted off its axis, the room retreating into an unfocused background as his vision narrowed to the man before him. “Chris?”

Chris Virdon’s throat worked, his jaw trembled. Thirty years melted away, and the man who was taller and broader in the chest than Alan suddenly became a young boy who missed his father. “Dad—,” his voice broke, and he rushed forward to pull Alan into a fierce hug. “Dad,” he said again, his voice muffled into Alan’s neck, “Oh my god, Dad. I can’t believe it’s you. I can’t believe you’re home.”

Well, my recipient just posted that she received her package, so I can post a pic of the gift I made for the EK Artisan Swap (which is a sooper sekrit type of swap). She's a fellow archer who likes celtic knotwork and earthtones, especially green. So I made her a leather archery bracer with a gold and green celtic knot and a green variegated archer's tassel.

EK Artisan Swap gift

Although this was the fourth round of this swap, it was my first time participating. It was very cool, and I'm looking forward to seeing what goody I get in return. And it's something I'll definitely do again when the next round starts up!
danagryphon: (Yuletide)
After a quick trip to Best Buy when I found out yesterday, the LAST day of the warranty on my laptop, that the CD drive wasn't working right, I worked frantically to finish my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide assignment and squeaked it in right under the midnight deadline. It took me a while to find the right beginning, but once I had that, the story came pretty easily. It still has a lot more schmaltz in it than I'm really comfortable writing, and I'm not really happy with the ending, but I do have until the collection goes live on Christmas day to tweak it a bit. Which I will.

However, meanwhile, I took a pinch hit (yay, my first one!) for a story that I've been wanting to do for a long time. Rewatching the source material now to get the voices of the characters going in my head, but I've already got a plot zombie eating my brain, so that should go quick enough to make the midnight deadline for tonight. Then I *might* do one more treat to repurpose a story I had started and not finished last year, but which I really, really like some of the pieces of. We'll see how it goes.

Once [livejournal.com profile] yuletide is all done, then I need to get back to my [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang PotA story. Then back to my PotA novel that's been on hiatus for a couple of months now. But hoping that the momentum of these challenges will inspire me to push through the last few chapters to get that finished more easily. It'll get finished by hook or by crook, it's just a matter of how quickly.

Meanwhile, still waiting for [livejournal.com profile] mpregbigbang to post their artist claiming list that was supposed to go up a week ago. I'm itchy to do some art as well.
danagryphon: (Slashing Ur Doodz)
Waiting for the artist claiming post to go up on [livejournal.com profile] mpregbigbang, It was supposed to go up yesterday, but the mod is having an attack of RL. I see a couple of stories from the checkpoints could be fun to do art for. So here I am, trying my best to be patient.

::drums fingers::

To quote Inigo, "I hate waiting."
danagryphon: (Arms)
Hubby and I went away this past weekend for a holiday party/awards banquet/Christmas parade for the Shrine Clowns down on Cape Cod. The town of Falmouth make a BIG shindig out of their Xmas parade weekend; the parade is Sunday, but on Saturday, the town is hopping with craft fairs and shopping and all sorts of events. The hotel we stay in has a gingerbread house decorating event for kids, which we get to see the set up for while we are eating breakfast in their dinning room. This year, I didn't go on the big craft fair/shopping expedition because I'm very leery of jostling crowds with my shoulder a bit tender. So I stayed at the hotel and rested while Hubby went out.

Otherwise, the shoulder was actually pretty good, and by the end of the weekend, I was actually able to lift my arm over my head (part of the way, at least) under its own power. Today I go for my post-op appt (it was moved from Friday) and get my stitches out. Thank GODS. The incisions are all completely healed, but the stitches are itching like CRAZY. I've actually stopped wearing the bandaids over them because they were irritating my skin more than anything. Once the stitches come out, I'll be able to put some lotion on it to relieve the dry skin, which should help with the itching.

Tomorrow I go back into the office, braving the commuter rail and the subway to do so. I am debating about wearing the sling or not. Generally, I don't need it, but it is a good deterrent to keep people at a little distance. (Two instances this weekend of people slapping me good-naturedly on the shoulder are strong incentives to wear it when in a crowd who doesn't know or give a shit that I'm still healing.) Plus, I still do not have any strength in the arm to hold on if I'm stuck standing, so it might get people to offer me a seat if that happens. Yeah, I think I'll probably wear it for the commute, but take it off while at work.

The other thing that should happen today is getting my order for PT, which I will set up tomorrow. I'm hoping I can just do once a week if I promise to do the same exercises at home. I have all the stuff I need to from the last time I did PT. But I definitely want to do PT with a therapist so I can have someone tell me when I might be pushing it, and to track my progress more objectively. I can't WAIT until I can pick up a bow, for example, so much so that I know I'm going to have to force myself to take the therapist's word as law on when that can finally happen. However, I am going to start going to an indoor range this Thursday with my two yeomen, to work with them over the winter. Plus, yeoman #2 and I need to get together to make his arrows.

Time to get back to projects. I have a ton of stuff to get done now for Birka, including calligraphy on 3 scrolls (one is a private commission) and at least one garb outfit (more if I decide to make something new for the boy, too). I also have a commission for pair of leather coronets that don't have a firm deadline, but I'd like to get working on it soon (although I'm still waiting on some sketches from the client for one of them). I *did* manage to finish my EK Artisan Exchange gift before my surgery, so I just need to get that packed up and in the mail.

Now I just need to find my motivation!
